History

A BRIEF CHRONICLE OF THE GREEK INTELLIGENCE SERVICES BEFORE EYP (1924-1953)[1]
  • March 1924- September 1925
    Establishment of the Intelligence Centre of Corfu.
    The aim of the establishment of this Centre was to collect intelligence in order to counter the Italian espionage activity and propaganda, resulting from the implementation of the “Mare Nostrum” policy, which aimed at the expansion of the Italian dominance in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • 1925, Establishment of the Special Security Service
    It was subordinate to the Ministry of Interior and its mission was the ‘monitoring of any suspicious organization against state security, the countering of foreign espionage and the supervision of aliens’
  • 1926 (January)
    January 1926, Establishment of the General State Security Service
    It was subordinate to the President of the Republic. Its mission included “the monitoring of any kind of propaganda carried out against the state security and the introduction of counter-measures”.
  • January 1936,
    Establishment of the State Defense Service
    It was subordinate to the Ministry for Military Affairs. Its responsibilities included the "monitoring of foreign propaganda carried out against the State, the movement and dwelling of foreign nationals in the country, the collection of intelligence relating to the security of the State and the introduction of counter-measures." In addition to this, the Service was responsible for the ‘monitoring of communist and of any other kind of propaganda.’ In November 5, this Service was dissolved by the Metaxas regime and was replaced by the Deputy Ministry for Public Security, which severely persecuted dissidents, as well as those who embraced the communist ideology.
  • February 1949
    Establishment of the Central Intelligence and Investigation Service.This was the forerunner of KYP
